Mistfall Hunter Review & Verdict
A post-launch take on the dark-fantasy PvPvE extraction RPG from Bellring Games and Skystone Games.
What it is
Mistfall Hunter is a third-person action RPG that wraps Souls-like combat in a high-stakes extraction loop. You play a Gyldhunter resurrected by a girl named Dew, sent into the mist to harvest Gyldenblood and mend the shattered Web of Fate. Made by Bellring Games (their debut title) and published by Skystone Games — the studio co-founded by Diablo creator David Brevik and Bill Wang — it launched July 29, 2026 on PC, PS5, and Xbox, with a Day One Game Pass release.
Strengths
- The core hook works. "Tarkov with swords and spells" is a real fantasy: stance-swapping classes, parries, and positioning make the combat satisfying.
- Strong launch demand. Over 1,000,000 players in the first week and a ~44,000 Steam concurrent peak show the premise landed.
- Full crossplay. PC, PS5, and Xbox players share matchmaking, and Game Pass lowers the barrier to entry.
- Low hardware bar. A GTX 1060-class GPU clears the minimum — unusual for a 2026 UE5 release.
- Active roadmap. Bellring has already published a Season 1 plan (new endgame, solo Brandrgarde mode, new monsters) responding to feedback.
Weaknesses
- Launch optimization. Frame drops and instability during intense fights are the most common complaint, even on capable hardware.
- Solo content gated. At launch some maps and main-quest content were locked behind three-player squads, frustrating solo players.
- Mixed monetization perception. In-game purchases are cosmetic-only (no pay-to-win), but the storefront drew scrutiny in a genre sensitive to it.
- Identity tension. Straddling methodical Souls-like pacing and fast extraction loops can feel awkward to both crowds.
Who should buy
- ✅ Fans of extraction shooters who want blades, bows, and magic instead of guns.
- ✅ Souls-like players curious about a PvPvE loop with real stakes.
- ✅ Groups of friends who want a crossplay squad night.
- ❌ Solo players wanting the full quest unlocked from day one (wait for the Season 1 solo mode).
- ❌ Anyone unwilling to tolerate launch-window performance rough edges.
Verdict
At its launch price — or free via Game Pass — Mistfall Hunter is an easy recommend for extraction-genre fans who can live with rough edges. The foundation is genuinely good and the developers are shipping fixes and content fast. Buy it (or sub) if the loop appeals; hold if you need a polished solo experience and wait for the September solo-mode update.
